[posting date: April 30, 2006]
I spent 5+ hours yesterday morning and evening birding in Greene County
and three nearby counties.
I started by checking a few areas with mature deciduous trees in
Greeneville. [Time spent: approximately 0.25 hr.] A short while later,
I headed down Highway 11-E and I-81 to the upper Douglas Lake area.
My first stop was in Leadvale community in Jefferson County, just north
of the J.M. Walters Bridge on Highway 25-E. I stopped on Old Airport
Road, on Leadvale Road, on Leadvale Church Road, and at the TWRA boat
launch on the shoreline opposite Rankin Bottoms. [Time spent:
approximately 0.75 hr.]
>From Leadvale, I traveled south on 25-E to Cocke County, where I
checked Dutch Bottoms, Lehigh Drive, Industrial Road, Rankin Bridge,
Rankin Bottoms, Brown Hollow Road, and Rankin Hill Road. These spots
form a loop of good sites offering much lake, shoreline, and woodland
habitat. Unfortunately, water levels were higher than I expected, so
there was little habitat for shorebirds and waders. [Time spent:
approximately 2.50 hr.]
After exiting Rankin Hill Road onto Highway 25-E, I returned to Leadvale
in Jefferson County and proceeded through southern Hamblen County along
back roads from the mouth of the Nolichuckey River to St. Paul's
Presbyterian Church at exit 12 on I-81. [Time spent: approximately 0.50
hr.]
I returned to Greeneville via I-81 and Highway 11-E, detouring briefly
through a few backroad sites in the Mohawk area of Greene County. [Time
spent: approximately 0.25 hr.]
Much later, toward early evening, I visited a few spots in the Tusculum
area of Greene County. [Time spent: approximately 1.00 hr.]
Except for finding few shorebirds and waders, I had an excellent day.
