[Bristol-Birds] No Blue-headed Vireo

Area Birders,
Today, Monday, Ed Talbott III and myself, Roger Mayhorn, went in search of
the first Blue-headed Vireo of the season in the Breaks Park on the VA - KY
border. Since they had been seen in TN and at Pipestem State Park in WV we
thought the chances were pretty good of finding one. The earliest arrival
date we have for the Blue-headed in the area is March 24, but we were
hopeful.

No Blue-headed was located, but nevertheless, we had a good birding day and
accumulated more data for our one year old bird club. All of the birds found
today were smaller than last week's Ostrich. :) Wood Ducks and Ring-necked
Ducks were on the small lake in the park. A Brown Creeper was working the
large trees along a trail next to a small flock of Golden-crowned Kinglets.
Two Red-shouldered Hawks on a ridge near the Beaver Pond were making a
couple of female Ring-necked Ducks very nervous. A flock of crows harassed
the hawks until they temporarily left the area. Since a pair of
Red-shoulders nested in the park last year, it is believed that they are
doing the same this year. As we drove out of the park four Pileated
Woodpeckers on the same tree caught our eye. It must be hormones and spring
that caused this congregation.
One of the high points of the day was a Winter Wren singing very softly from
inside a dark mass of vines. Maybe he was practicing for the main event,
which should be soon.

Following is the complete day's list:
