Ft. Patrick Henry Dam (below the dam)
Kingsport, Sullivan Co., TN
2 - Eastern Kingbirds (one adult, one pre-fledge)
5 - Black-crowned Night-Heron ( 2 adult, 3 juv.)
I watched an adult E. Kingbird land on the end of a cross member of the
electric sub-station and realized that it had a nest built there.
Within a couple of seconds I saw an older but still pre-fledged juvenile
moving around the adult. A nice surprise considering the lateness of
the year.
This winter I had noticed 2 possibly three pair of Black-crowned
Night-Heron down stream from the dam just prior to their nesting
season. It is a good possibility that these nested somewhere within a
half mile downstream from the dam, but I was unable to make an
exhaustive search this year. Seeing these Night-Heron seems to lend
more credence to my supposition. Maybe next year.
