[Bristol-Birds] More BBC 2008 Annual Award Winners

 BBC 2008 Annual Award Winners

Birders Mike Poe and Lisa Tyler were recognized
at the Bristol Bird Club's Annual Regional Christmas
Party Saturday evening.

JAMES & MAE MUSICK SERVICE AWARD

Mike earned the Musick service award for his enormous
body of work for design, layout and photo editing of the
second edition of The Birds Of Northeast Tennessee
which was published in August. He worked for weeks
and weeks to put together the book which was published
by BBC. More than 3,000 photo images of birders were
submitted by area photographers. He spent long hours
and sometimes stayed up all night making sure every
detail was as near perfect as possible. He learned a
layout program needed by the printer and worked with
them to make it all happen.

2008 BEST NEW BIRDER OF THE YEAR

One year ago Lisa Tyler was trying to determine if she
should attend the BBC Annual Regional Christmas Party.
Finally, she sent a message saying she would like to
attend but was not a member. After attending the party,
she just kept coming back as a valued and promising
new BBC member. She moved to the area from New
York state just a short while back and began to meet new
birders, new friends and new bird clubs. Lisa has an
amazing passion for field work. This past spring she
went daily to monitor a Yellow-crowned Night Heron's
nest along the Watauga River which fascinated her.
She began to post the progress on Bristol Birds Net.
Together with Michele Sparks, she went with Wallace
and Carolyn Coffey for an introduction to Shady
Valley. She carefully took notes and later went back
with Michele to retrace the entire day and hopefully to
again meet up with The Nature Conservancy folks. In
order to better know the region, she scheduled a plane
flight with friends over her favorite birding sites in
the area and posted valuable photos she made on
Bristol Birds Net. She birded Rankin Bottom by boat,
birded with the Herndon Chapter TOS to the lower
South Carolina coast and birded twice to the Breaks
area with BBC and the Buchanan County Bird Club.
She also attended the TOS Annual Fall Meeting at
Chattanooga where she met several state TOS
leaders. She headed up the BBC distribution team
for The Birds of Northeast Tennessee and worked
with the Watauga Regional Library to place books in
every county, city, town and regional library in the
Northeast Tennessee area as well as colleges and
universities.

Area birders are proud of the excellent contributions
made this year by Mike and Lisa.
