MOUNTAIN EMPIRE
BUTTERFLY CLUB
June
21, 2008
ATTENDING
John Hay Sharon
Foster
Don Holt Larry
McDaniel
Ellen Parker Becky
Wilkerson
AGENDA
The meeting was called to
order by Larry McDaniel, president.
1.
MEBC HISTORY
Larry recounted
the organization of the club January 6, 2008 followed by
March 8th meeting when officers were designated:
Co-Presidents - Jeremy Stout and
Larry McDaniel
Secretary - Becky Wilkerson
Programs – Rack Cross
Field Trips – Don Holt
April 5th
Don Holt led a butterfly walk in Cocke County
May 24th
MEBC Seminar at Steele Creek Park Lodge. Over 40 people attended
the three sessions including the walk and the release of a Cecropia Moth.
2.
CLUB STRUCTURE
Larry related
that since the March meeting questions have been raised regarding a) the
affiliation of our club with a state/national organization, b) should the club
be more formal, and c) creation of treasurer to handle monies.
Following a
lengthy discussion by members it was decided to maintain the current
structures. If donations become
available, the club will recommend making the donation to Steele Creek Nature
Center for the
butterfly garden or for exhibits.
Sharon Foster
agreed to serve as treasurer if the need arises to collect money for
events/activities.
3.
MANAGEMENT OF E-MAIL
Larry
presently has a list of 50+ names to whom he forwards sightings, pictures and
announcements. It was decided that Larry
would continue to send information to the list of persons interested in
butterflies. He will send out a general
notice explaining to folks that information will be sent to individuals based
on three categories:
A Announcements
only
B Announcements
and sightings
C Announcements,
sightings and photographs
Based on
individual responses Larry will create the three categories and continue to
send the e-mails to the interested persons.
Additional
sites where information is available on the web are:
Wormspit.com
Caterpillersofeasternforest – google
ButterfliesandmothsofNA.com
Xerces.org
Butternut.at yahoo/groups
Don made a
recommendation that a list of butterflies in the area be compiled as a
reference for members and the public.
Hard copies could be made available at the Nature Center. Larry has already
compiled a significant list
to date. No further action was taken.
4.
POSSIBLE PROGRAMS
Sharon suggested a
field trip to Jonesborough to Virginia Kennedy’s butterfly garden and also to
the WasteWater Treatment Plant where Frances Lambert has developed a butterfly
garden.
Becky
suggested having a photographic workshop as Rack had recommended.
Larry will
contact Rack regarding these recommendations.
