[Bristol-Birds] Merlin at dusk

Within Oak Hill Cemetery

Thanks to Rick Phillips of Kingsport, TN, I have a new life bird today.

A sole Merlin perched atop the very bald spruce tree that Rick posted on
Bristol-Birds (Jan. 17th, 2007) showed up at 4:50 PM this evening. No other
Merlin was visible. I had at least twenty minutes of study until the light
began to fade. I am amazed that the very occurance of a bird that Rick expected
to be there the same week in December, in that same cemetery, on that same tree
suddenly appeared while I was there. I'm not sure which species is the real
creature of habit. Is is the human, expecting it, or is it the Merlin, just
doing what is familiar? In any event, not just because I was in a cemetery, it
was one of those healing moments, directly from nature.

Also present:

Cedar Waxwings (60+) flying overhead
Carolina Chickadee
Northern Cardinal
Dark-eyed Junco

Michele Sparks
