Hi Hawk Watching Fans:
Here is the Mendota Fire Tower hawk watch report for September 23, 2004. The
year-to-date figures are in parentheses:
Broad-winged Hawk: 151 (4247)
Sharp-shinned Hawk: 2 (12)
Cooper's Hawk: 3 (8)
Am Bald Eagle: - (5)
Goshawk: - (1)
Am Kestrel: 4 (6)
Red-shouldered Hawk: - (2)
Osprey: 2 (23)
Red-headed WP 1 (22)
Weather Conditions: It seemed more like August than late September. The
temperature ranged from 55F to 84F. The wind was calm in the a.m. but increased
to
5-10 mph from the North, northeast in the afternoon. Skies were mostly clear
and sunny but we did have some light, wispy clouds, most from slowly
dissipating vapor trails. We saw most of our Broad-wings from 10:45 a.m. to
1:30 p.m.
The afternoon was very slow. As you can see, even though the Broad-wings
numbers
dropped off, we did have wider variety of birds compared to the first three
days of this week.
Observers included Bob Riggs, Ron Harrington, and Ron Pendleton. Our special
quests for the day were Sue Carter and ten students from her Environmental
Research class at Twin Springs, HS. Two students celebrated their birthday with
candles and chocolate cake (tasted mightily good). They had a great time and
added a lot of enthusiasm and excitement to the watch. Junior Kegley, the bus
driver, picked up more hawks with his naked eye than I could find with 10x50s.
Note: The Mendota Fire Tower is located atop Clinch Mountain (elevation
3100), on the Washington/Russell Counties line just about three miles north of
Mendota, VA. Plan to attend the 2nd Annual Mendota Hawk Festival on October 2,
2004, Mendota Community Center.
Hawk Watching: Catch the Fever. Come see for relief.
