Hi Hawk Watching Fans:
Here is the report from the Mendota Fire Tower for September 22, 2004. The
Year-to-date totals are in parentheses. The Mendota Fire Tower, elevation 3020,
is located atop Clinch Mountain, on the border between Washington and Russell
Counties in VA, about 3 miles north of Mendota, VA. The site was manned from
9:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. but no hawks were seen until 11:45 a.m., just before the
arrival of fall.
Broad-winged Hawk: 256 (4096)
Sharp-shinned Hawk: - (10)
Cooper's Hawk: 1(5)
Am Bald Eagle: - (5)
Goshawk: - (1)
Am Kestrel: - (2)
Red-shouldered Hawk: 1 (2)
The weather: Skies were clear with good visibility, but increasing haze.
Temperature ranged from 49F to 82F There was a light, but warmer breeze from
the
East, southeast. High skies again made it hard to see hawks, but today we had a
lot of "eyes" helping out: Greg Church and seven ecology students from
Tusculum College, Steve Hopps, Barbara Kingslover, Camille Kingsolver, and Amy
Redfern from Meadowview, VA; Fred Crabtree, Ken Hopkins, Bob Light, John
Dillow,
Tom Zollman, Bill Peters, and Chad Peters from Kingsport, TN; Randy Fallin,
Lori
Kizer, and Larry Kizer from Mountain City, TN.
Hawk Watching: Catch the Fever. Come see for relief.
