[Bristol-Birds] Lucky Kestrel

A lucky young American Kestrel was found for dead by a local
photographer/nature enthusiast who happened to be off Field's Gap in Scott
County at the right time. Shortly after a huge storm, Carson Waugh and his
girlfriend were their property (on their four-wheeler) removing debris and the
carcus of a groundhog when they found what they thought was a baby hawk of some
kind (probably knocked out of it's tree from the storm).

Lucky for the bird, Carson grew up with a Dad who taught him just what to do.
Carson and his girlfriend spent the night feeding it bread soaked in milk. They
were worried sick it would't make it, but the Kestrel was hungry and easy to
please. They stayed with it through the night. By morning, it had regained its
strength and finally flew off into the nearest tree.

A freelance photographer, Carson also works at the new Best Buy in Kingsport,
TN. Once we started talking about birds and photography, he knew he'd have a
captive audience with these photos. They were taken on his iPhone on June 28th
and he forwared them to me today to share. It was such a neat bird encounter!

Michele,

Likewise. I got on your flickr this morning and enjoyed some of your bird
pics...also I sat on my front porch this morning and used Ibird to call in some
local robins...The date we found the Kestrel was the 28th of June. The
location was off of Field's Gap in Scott Co. Attached are the photos and if
you need any other details please let me know. I look forward to delving
deeper into the world of birds.

Carson,
It was so uplifting to meet you today. Thanks for sharing your enthusiasm for
both photography and nature. I appreciate your advice on the camera as well.
If possible, please forward those American Kestrel pics to me with the date
they were taken. I believe you said it was Scott County, am I right? The
Kestrel is a permanent resident. It is generally found in open lowlands.

It was such a neat bird encounter with a happy ending!
Thanks!
