Dick Peake is probably the only person in southwest Virginia to actually
identify a Kirtland's warbler in this region. Verifying that the bird is there
is very useful in helping to identify the migration route of this extremely
rare species and to perhaps identify and protect critical habitat in the
migration corridor. As this species nests only in a very specialized jack-pine
habitat in north-central Michigan we can be sure that the bird is not being
harassed on its breeding ground. Dick Peake is an extremely responsible and
knowledgeable birder. Give the man a break!!! He was kind enough to tell the
rest of us that the bird was out there! Some would argue that he should not
have done that. Hope all is well with you Dick. Thanks for keeping us posted
on this very rare sighting. Ed Morgan, Abingdon, VA
