Iron Mountain Birding
Homestead Road, Grayson County, VA
Date: May 24, 2005
Participants: Randy Smith, Wallace Coffey and Ron Harrington

This loop begins at the intersection of Rt. 603 and Rt. 741 in Fairwood
Valley, Grayson County, VA. Homestead Road winds up Locust Ridge to Hurricane
Mountain and crosses the divide between the Holston River watershed and that of
the New River. This quiet, country road runs 3.6 miles to SR 16, about 2 miles
north of Troutdale, VA. Elevation ranges from 3440 to 3860. This route is
included in "Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail, Mountain Area", Discover our
Wild
Side, published by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.

Unless we heard or saw something of interest, we stopped for five minute
observations every .5 mile.
