The Herndon Chapter will make a field trip to Douglas Lake on Saturday,
Sept. 20. Meet at the K-Mart in Johnson City at 9 a.m. to carpool to
the destination. Douglas Lake is prime habitat for shorebirds and
wading birds. Bring a lunch or snacks and drinks, and dress for the weather. For

Joe McGuinness will lead a field trip to a bird banding operation on
Big Bald in Unicoi County on Sunday, Sept. 21. Meet at noon at the
offices of the U.S. Forest Service in the town of Unicoi. A 60-minute
trip is required to reach the destination. It's a good chance for
seeing some migrating birds, such as warblers, grosbeaks and even
raptors, up close.

The chapter's fall bird count will be held Saturday, Sept. 27. The
count includes the five-county area of Carter, Johnson, Sullivan,
Unicoi and Washington.

Leaders and count areas include:

Fred Alsop (929-FRED) at Roan Mountain/Ripshin Mountain in Carter
County.

Gary Wallace (542-8612) in Elizabethton/Wilbur Lake/Holston Mountain
in Carter County.

Joe McGuinness (743-0065) for Unicoi County, which will include Unaka
Mountain.

Rick Knight (282-5297) for Washington County.

Rob Biller and Tom McNeil (360-2970 )for Shady Valley in Johnson
County and Watauga Lake in Carter County and Johnson County.

Glen Eller (348-6194) for South Holston Lake in Sullivan County.

Those wishing to participate with any group can contact group leaders.

In addition, yard/feeder watchers in the count area are welcome. If
you count yard birds and wish to add to the tally, contact compiler
Rick Knight (423) 282-5297.

The compilation for the count will be held at 2p.m. on Sunday, Sept.
28, at Sycamore Shoals State Park in Elizabethton at the picnic
tables. In the event of rain, compilation will be held inside park
headquarters.

Fall counts are a great time to see some migrating birds in Northeast
Tennessee.
