[Bristol-Birds] Harlan's Hawk at Winged Deer

On Sunday, 3/20/05, I reported a dark morph Red-tailed Hawk seen at Winged Deer
Park in Johnson City, TN. I added it had the appearance of a Harlan's Hawk
which is a sub-species of the Red-tail that winters in the central region of
the US. At the time, I based that observation on the tail being a smudgy white
fading to slightly darker gray at the terminal portion. Referring to Sibley's
field guide I noticed that it looked more like the Harlan's than the Western
Dark Morph sub-species.
Last night, after pouring over numerous texts, I found that the tail pattern
described is more than indicative. Apparently it is diagnostic. I haven't done
any internet research on this yet. I would welcome feedback, insight and
opinions.
