The great news today (5/8) is that the eaglet at the South Holston
Lake Bald Eagle's nest fledged and took it first flight this morning.
Of course the bad news is that so very many of you, who
desperately wanted to see the nest while it was active, missed that
opportunity. I will take the blame for that on two counts. First, it
seemed that the eaglet would still be in the nest for another week
or so and that is my error in judgment. Secondly, I was simply
not able to coordinate a visit with the homeowners along with
many untimely and unfortunate developments along the way.
Resident Jack Millspaugh, left a message
on my home phone machine about 4:30 p.m.
and reported the eaglet took flight this
morning and has not been back to the nest.
He did report that one of the adults was
briefly seen at the nest.
Of course we are all thrilled that the first
nesting known in the South Holston Lake
region has been successful.
As neighbors Bill and Sandy Lawson recently reported on their
observations from their lakeside summer recreation home:
"We are going to be sorry when this
special adventure is over. It has
been a great thrill and wonderfully
educational."
What an journey !
Let's go birding . . . .
