Dear friends,
I visited the great blue heron rookery today (4-12-03) about 7:30 pm.
There is a lot of activity there and it will be growing, because the
eggs are beginning to hatch. Of the approx. 15 nests, I observed birds
at about 12 nests. Most exciting of all, 2 nests now have 2 chicks
each. I had not seen any chicks on my last visit on April 5.
The rookery is just below Fort Patrick Henry Dam at Kingsport and below
the Hwy 37 bridge. Today I set up my scope on the upper portion of the
TVA drive near the now blocked-off entrance to the dam. From that
vantage point, there is an unobstructed view of the colony.
I plan to return to the site at mid-day on Sunday for a better view.
