Tess Cumbie, Gilbert Derouen, Reece Jamerson, H.P. Langridge and Bryan Stevens birded at Austin Springs, Boone Lake, Washington County, in the early afternoon on Tuesday, March 23. Best finds included: Greater Yellowlegs (1), Northern Harrier (1) and some Barn Swallows. Langridge had a Cliff Swallow missed by other members of the group. Other shorebirds included Wilson's Snipe and Killdeer. There were still plenty of Tree Swallows, Red-tailed Hawk and American Kestrel. Later in the afternoon, at Musick's Campground, S. Holston Lake, Sullivan Co., we had 27 Red-breasted Mergansers, 2 Scaup sp., Double-crested Cormorant (1), Common Loon (1) and probably 4 Horned Grebe. We thought we might have had a Red-necked Grebe, but it was too far away and we never could ID conclusively. Plenty of Ring-billed Gulls. We also had 10 Ring-necked Ducks at a farm pond on the Virginia side of the state line a couple of miles past the turn to go to Musick's Campground. Finally, on his way home, Bryan Stevens had 4 Wild Turkey toms in a field next to Bell Cemetery in Limestone Cove in Unicoi Co.
