Subject: Western Kingbird
Hello Bill Grigsby,
My son (G. Gordon Brown) and I were birding this morning (September 17) on the campus of the University of Virginia College at Wise and the High Knob area. At 9:30 AM, we spotted a Western Kingbird in the shrubbery on the east side of the Practice Football field behind the stadium of UVA College at Wise. When you drive up to the stadium from highway 646, pass by the stadium and then turn right as soon as you see the practice field. The bird was near an old trailer shed and was sitting on the overhead power wires and flying to the ground and to the shrubs in the area. The white tail edges were easily observed. There were also phoebes, mockingbirds and thrashers in the area. We used the size, the tail, the white throat and breast, the yellow flanks and belly, and the dark band to the eye as diagnostic tools. We are also very familiar with the bird since we have frequently observed the bird in Nebraska and South Dakota. I noticed in Peake's Book that the bird has only been recorded once in this area and that was in 1969.
I thought someone in your club might be interested.
