Wallace--sorry for the repeat, seems I somehow goofed
with the bristol-birds@xxxxxxxxxxxxx address. But we'll
give credit where it is due and your efforts with your
Historical Snippets are most worthy of being applauded

Subject: Regarding Wallace's last 2 Historical Snippets

Wallace and members of the Bristol Bird Club,

Wallace , your last two Historical Snippets , are most interesting--
for different reasons..............

Historical Snippet-Mar. 17, 1996 relating the Bristol Club and
Bibbee Nature Club field trips together detailing how and where
we birded together brought back a flood of memories (again).
Since you had dates for these, I dusted off my own birding journals
to compare and added  some notes;

July 22, 1995 Bristol and Bibbee Club trip to Grayson Highland St. Pk.

We started off at the Visitors Center at Grayson Highland, watched
a slide program, ate a picnic lunch then drove to the Massie Gap area.
Per your notes and the photo at Massie Gap, we skirted around
the edge of Sullivan Swamp to look at the wild ponies including
a mother with a young foal .Some of the '' wild'' ponies came up
to us. And we did some birding along the way...getting a real close
up of a singing Vesper Sparrow.

After Sullivan Swamp, we travelled to White Top Mtn to look for
the Alder Flycatcher and the Red Crossbills...no luck this day but
we'd had them there other trips. We botonized and butterflied and
birded our way back down. And at the end of our field trip, Wallace
gave us copies of "The Birds of Smyth County, VA" an annotated
checklist by Tony Decker, Marion,VA- 1981. End of a perfect trip.

Wallace's latest Historical Snippet regard the restoration of the
Bald Eagle population is a tale of such an accomplishment of so
many individuals, organizations and general public working
together towards a common goal. Simple astounding when you
think of the man hours, dedication, inspiration and perspiration
that went into that project ! Just shows what a dedicated lot
birders can be and can do....WOW--y'all are amazing !

Here in southern West Virginia, Jim Phillips, Pipestem Naturalist
and Bibbee Club Member, has coordinated a Count Survey of eagles
wintering in the New River / Bluestone River/ Greenbrier River and
the Bluestone Dam areas each January for the past 3 years. Bald
Eagles are seen here year round now. March 15, 2008, Jim is
conducting Breeding Survey . Those Bald Eagles having to be
nesting somewhere in this area. Immature birds as well as adults
are seen frequently and from that Hinton Dairy Queen as well the
rest of the stretch of New River that flows through Hinton and the
above mentioned 3 rivers and dam.

Wallace, you do such a good job with the Historical Snippets.
I've been copying them to share with some of our members
who are not on the bristol-birds list-serve.
By the way, you all ( the Bristol Bird Club) are welcome to come
back any time and bird with us in West Virginia.
Thanks, again....
