Featuring the Publication Team:
The Birds of Northeast Tennessee
His newest edition of this title sets a standard for regional
books in many ways. Not only does he have a rich and
broad archive of the bird records of the region, his ability to
organize the information and present it orderly is notable.
He is a former Assistant Editor of the Tennessee journal of
ornithology, The Migrant, but he has an established national
reputation in field ornithology. His 1994 edition constantly
enjoyed rave reviews. The Second Edition will be much
heralded in Tennessee ornithological circles and beyond.
Rick L. Knight
He took the reins for publication of this Second Edition as the
Bristol Bird Club took on the project. All five of the regional
bird books published by BBC have been under his leadership.
A former Editor of The Migrant, he has spent half a century
studying birds in the region. He brings 41 years of media
experience to the project, having spent 31 in newspaper --
most as the marketing director. He served as a vice-president
for communications for the Chamber of Commerce. He also
chaired key areas of the Bristol United Way fund raising campaigns.
Wallace Coffey
Mike joined the team as the photo editor and took on the
responsibly for layout and graphic design of the publication.
Mike is arguably the best bird photographer in the Mountain Empire
region and certainly should be recognized as the best of the
best when it comes to long-lens digital photography of birds.
He manages the A.N. Webber Inc. freight trucking terminal at
Kingsport. Mike is past president and present webmaster of the
Sullivan County Historical and Genealogical Society. He is
a highly recognized scuba instructor and dives in foreign countries.
He is talented as an underwater photographer. A loyal member of BBC.
Mike Poe
For much of the spring and early summer, Tom took Knight's data and
updated the long-famous Seasonal Occurrence tables that are an
important part of the book. This included using the modern taxonomy
as well as the inclusion of 21 species not found in the 1994 edition.
A native of Carter County, he studied under Dr. Fred Alsop at ETSU
where he took both a B.S. and M.S. He has been an Assistant Professor,
of Biology at Northeast State Community College since 2002. He has
been on the birding scene in Northeast Tennessee for many years and
is held with high esteem by the birding community.
Tom McNeil
Her sudden visibility on the scene of birding in Northeast Tennessee
comes from a recent rush in volunteering to take on tough challenges
and her tenacious durability on virtually every Christmas bird count in
NET last winter. She is a 5th grade teacher in the Sullivan County
School System and sponsors her school's science club. Michele eagerly
took hold of a complex and challenging job of red tape, phone calls and
digging through a mountain of paper to acquire the book's important ISBN
number and Library of Congress number. She helped raised funds for the
book. Her talented photography resulted in several bird photos in this edition.
Michele Sparks
Her interest in birds dates to childhood. She once planned to study
ornithology at Cornell University. Her art graces the inside front
and back covers of The Birds of Northeast Tennessee. Her
conceptual nature paintings have been shown in over 40 solo exhibits
throughout the country. Her art has shown at the United States Botanic
Garden Gallery (Washington, D.C.), the National Academy of Science
(Washington, D.C.) and The Smithsonian. Her enthusiasm for this book
and the time and dedication she invested have been amazing.
Suzanne Stryk
His role as a reviewer suggested significant changes and excellent cover
quotes which grace the back of this edition. A graduate of Kingsport D-B
High School and the University of Tennessee - Knoxville, he has suddenly
left major footprints. After earning a Ph.D. at Minnesota, he became the
Head of Ornithology at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History in Ohio.
He has recently been named editor of The Cardinal, the Ohio journal of
ornithology. Last week he took over the role as recording secretary of the
American Ornithologists' Union at the organizations annual meeting. While
a student in college, he worked two summers as a naturalist at Steele Creek
Nature Center and spends his Christmas holidays on local Christmas counts.
Andy Jones
A Ph.D. graduate of the famous Cornell University, he was the Cornell Laboratory
of Ornithology's first technical editor of the lab's Living Bird magazine. He
suggested an important and valuable idea for Rick's Second Edition. During his
career,
he was on the editorial board of the Wilson's Bulletin -- a major national
ornithological publication. He grew up in Johnson City and lived behind
Milligan
College and earned his B.S. at East Tennessee State University in 1970. He is
a former assistant editor of The Migrant. He will soon retire from the faculty
at
Cornell. His cover quotes can be found on the back of Rick's book.
Charlie Smith
For many years, students and researchers used the same crude map drawing for
everything published regarding biology in NET. So did Knight's 1994 edition.
Rob
answered the challenge to take it a few more levels into modern graphics. A
geography graduate of ETSU and survey technician with the City of Johnson City
for the past
10 years, he used that and his 5 years of skills in private surveying to
develop a beautiful
new map for this second edition. He used PhotoShop and a Tennessee State
generated
template to overlay elements from internet mapping sources. He is a Tennessee
High School
graduate and began birding 20 years. He has birded all across the US.
Rob Biller
A Bristol Virginia printer who owns the business with his wife, Karen, has
printed all five books for the
Bristol Bird Club since the group printed its first in 1994. He is
knowledgeable in printing bird books
and always looks forward to working with the BBC. He knows of the club's
talent and expertise in the
printing field and allows the publication team full access to his plant during
the production. He bends
over backwards to get everything as near perfect as possible. He has modern
four-color equipment
and technology as well as a great staff that knows how much Sam values the
business of the BBC as
well as he enjoys the club's projects. His plant has modern binding capability
and all of their equipment
is fast and clean. This was our first full color book and his staff held our
hands and walked us through each
step until we used desktop publishing to layout the book in its entirety. A
feat BBC is very proud about.
Sam Mornings
Good thinks happen when good and talented people come forward to help a cause
they believe
in. She deserves a trophy. When the production team ran into a wall of
trouble trying to get an
historic photograph that was a critical link in our history of birders in the
region, Susan sensed
our need and knew she had contacts that could make it happen in New Jersey.
The U.S. National
Museum in Washington had already run out of places to search and ways to find
the photo. But
Susan got busy on the telephone and her computer and, in a couple of days,
broke a log jam. The
photo came in perfect shape just in time. She is a 4th grade teacher in the
Rogersville City Schools.
She formerly taught in Sullivan County and joined Bristol Birds Net in those
earlier days. But when
she moved to Rogersville and her beautiful home on John Sevier Lake, her
birding skills and experience
quickly surfaced. She has constantly reported some of the region's most
regular and rare birds.
Susan Hubley
The best way to meet Adam Campbell is through the images of his telephoto lens
and not the
reading of his radar equipment. He is a deputy with the Unicoi County
Sheriff's Department. He
became interested in birds by taking courses under Dr. Gary Wallace at Milligan
College and going
afield with him. He is a freelance sports photographer for area newspapers,
takes wedding photos
and is a professional photographer. When not at his business stations, he is
afloat trout fishing
Northeast Tennessee rivers. There he has come upon rare migrants and great
birding photo opportunities.
Adam is very excited about his photos appearing in this edition. But he is not
nearly as excited as we
are for the birders of the region. You are meeting one of the best bird
photographers ever in this region.
Adam Campbell -- Photographer
A retired military officer, he lives near Lebanon, VA. in Russell County and
travels widely over the region
taking photos of birds and birding with the region's best and most respected
birders. He is an active
member of the Russell County Bird Club. His personality, willingness to learn
from those with wisdom
quickly became obvious. His great telephoto pictures of birds in this edition
occupy key positions and
highly visible presentation which his art demands. All of his photos in this
book were taken in the five
county area covered by The Birds of Northeast Tennessee -- as did all other
photographers. His digital photographs capture the vibrant colors and
diversity of nature abounding in Appalachia. A member of
"Round the Mountain," his work is exhibited at the BB&T Bank in Lebanon, the
Appalachian Arts Center in Richlands, the Concord Museum in Concord,
Massachusetts. He resides with his wife and three cats
at the foot of Clinch Mountain in Russell County, Virginia.
Richard Kretz -- Photographer
He lives in Johnson City. He and his wife Linda are avid nature photographers,
birds being their special love. Dexter and Linda have strong ties to Hampton
Creek Cove which Linda's father Roy Robertson owned for years before he sold it
to Southern Appalachian Highland Conservancy. The Roan is a special place for
them, and photography is something Linda and Dexter enjoy together. He is a
co-owner of Valley Equipment Company, Inc.
Jonesborough, TN, a company which sells industrial machinery and
re-manufactures used equipment. His bird
photos occupy some of the most beautiful positions in this edition. His photos
were included in a show, "Roan Reflections," a photography exhibit at the
Carroll Reece Museum at ETSU, hosted by Southern Appalachian Highlands
Conservancy. He has photographed birds in several countries. Linda is a
retired school administrator.
Dexter Newman -- Photographer
He holds the position of Professor of Biological Sciences at East Tennessee
State University in Johnson City, Tennessee. He received his Ph.D. and his M.S.
in Zoology from the University of Tennessee, and his B.S. in Biology and Fine
Arts from Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee. Fred
specializes in the area of ornithology and natural history and has carried out
natural history and bird studies in all 50 states, most of Canada, the U.S.
Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Mexico and the Amazon Basin of Brazil. He is well
known for his
Smithsonian book series "Birds of North America." His experience in bird
photograph dates nearly 40 years and
his photographs of birds at the nests are among some of the best of their kind
anywhere. He has been a faculty
member at ETSU for decades. He has frequently written articles for The Migrant
as well as many popular nature journals and conservation magazines. His
excellent bird photography appears among the best of the region.
Fred Alsop -- Photographer
His photography is among the truly surprising contributions he makes to the
Second Edition. Bryan has vast
experience birding in the area. His name is connected throughout the text to
great finds and his photographs
are obvious and well presented. He is a passionate member of the Lee & Lois
Herndon Chapter of TOS at
Elizabethton, TN. He has been a top leader of the officers and is a constant
promoter of the club's activities.
He has an article coming out about the club in Tennessee Conservation magazine
. He has spent years as a journalist and has worked for several newspapers at
Elizabethton, Erwin, Jonesborough and Johnson City. He has frequently written
columns about birds and many exciting feature stories. Brian has probably the
largest following of readers of bird columns in the area. He currently writes
for the Elizabethton Star. His beautiful bird photos and the ability to use
them in creative ways adds to the value and beauty of the Second Edition.
Bryan Stevens -- Photographer
A former public school teacher, she has long been one of the Bristol Bird
Club's most supportive members.
Her son is Charlie Parker who is a permanent part-time naturalist on the staff
of the Steele Creek Nature
Center. Ellen was one of the main fund raisers for The Birds of Northeast
Tennessee. She secured a
significant contribution from the Friends of Steele Creek Nature Center and
Park. She is secretary of that
group. She has contributed personally to the programs of Steele Creek Nature
Center, becoming a tireless
advocate for better things for the center as well advocating for a new
state-of-the-art addition to the center which is an approved project of the
Bristol Tennessee City Council. Her husband, Bob, is a civic leader
in Johnson City and a successful industrialist, owning his own manufacturing
plant. Ellen made a major and
significant contribution to the Financial Team's efforts and paved the way for
much success for the book.
Ellen Parker
He quickly came forward early in the drive to raise funds for the second
edition book. Zellie asked if
any effort were being made to solicit business to help contribute to the book.
He was able to lead a delegation
to a meeting with the Bays Mountain Park Association which is a friends group.
The sponsorship put
together another link in the funding needs. He followed up with another
significant and sizeable corporate-type
donation with a major check from the Kingsport Tomorrow initiative, a
non-profit citizens' organization in the greater Kingsport region. They work to
improve the community through citizen participation in determining its future.
Zellie is retired
from Tennessee Eastman at Kingsport where he was a long-time prominent
employee. He was a leader in strategic planning training. He has, for many
years, promoted Eastern Bluebird conservation, habitat and breeding structure
opportunity in the Kingsport area. He has been the key person in the Kingsport
Blue Bird Society which is associated with Kingsport
Tomorrow. He is an active member and supporter of the Bristol Bird Club. His
work with the Financial Team was special.
Zellie Earnest
Bill's active support of the Second Edition project was an important
contribution. A former IBM Systems Engineer who worked in sales, he made a
call on the Bays Mountain Park Association solicitation with the second edition
Financial Team which was instrumental in making that a reality. He is a former
member of that board. He works
part time with the Eastman Credit Union -- the region's largest and one of the
state's largest. Bill closes home equity loans for the credit union. His
family is very close to Andy Jones. Bill served two terms as President of the
Bristol Bird Club and was instrumental in the recent Tennessee Ornithological
Society annual state spring meeting at Bristol Virginia. He was also
responsible in the club's memo of understanding with the Virginia Division of
Parks which is the BBC's flagship program for public bird walks and serving the
community.
Bill Grigsby
She is a former President of the BBC and is currently serving as Treasure of
the club, which she has done so well for a number of years. As the leader of
the Second Edition Financial Team, she pays the bills, keeps up
with donations, depositing checks, keeping records and making sure our income
meets the needed expenses
for the publication of the Second Edition. Janice has been a long-time
employee in the pharmacy department of
Bristol Welmont Hospital where she has had significant supervisory
responsibilities. She is an avid birder and has birded in the tropical
rainforest with the BBC "Rainforest Adventure" committee which conducts field
trips
to South America. She has birded widely across the nation. Janice and her
husband, Fred, are frequent
participants with Southwest Virginia bird clubs where she is a member at
Russell County and Buchanan County.
Janice Martin
Lisa is one of the bright, new, smiling faces to arrive on the region birding
scene in recent years. She has quickly become a familiar birder and bird club
member to so many. She loves to go birding and has tremendously enjoyed life
here since moving to the area from Pennsylvania. She particularly loves the
varied mountain terrain and mountain birds. But she also enjoys her bird club
and participating in field trips. She works for American Water Heaters in
Johnson City working with the company's customer service, warranty and
technical service representatives who respond quickly to any ordering or
service issue. She is the leader of
the BBC Second Edition Book Distribution Team. They begin this week getting
out books by mail and delivery
to local libraries and other volume distribution points. Lisa manages an
important post-printing job for BBC.
Lisa Tyler
Wilma has been work hard as a member of the BBC Second Edition Book
Distribution Team. Early on she
urged the BBC Publication Team to get an ISBN number and Library of Congress
number. That eventually
was the suggestion we needed to get us underway and serious about that project.
She has been working
with the primary assignment to contact the larger university and public
libraries to determine those who will
need extra copies. That list will help the Book Distribution Team work more
closely with the Watauga Regional
Library which Lisa Tyler brought on board to distribute the Second Edition to
all of the Northeast Tennessee
libraries which are members of the regional library. Michele Sparks also works
as a co-chair of that team
with Lisa and, teaming with Wilma, they will eventually get the books
distributed. The immediate distribution
goal is to deliver books to those attending Tuesday night's BBC book party at
Steele Creek Park.
Wilma is the widow of a United Methodist minister and she also was a public
school teacher. She is retired.
Wilma Boy
Carolyn has, by the necessity of her Parkinson's illness, traveled with her
husband to all of the
meetings of the Production Team and has been well accepted both socially and
helpfully at the
various meetings -- many of which she attended for four and five hours. It has
been one of the
thrilling things she has done. She has enjoyed the process of watching all of
the planning, and
listening to the thinking that goes into such plans. She has worked to keep up
with checks coming
in the mail and watched over financial matters. Among her greatest thrills has
been on the front
line when the printing presses first rolled out the book cover. She has
enjoyed the fellowship of
the Publishing Team. Carolyn has been a birder for 44 years, birding
throughout the country and
keeping a life list, as does her 84-year-old mother. Carolyn retired from
financial services after 45 years
Carolyn Coffey
Jennifer surged into the Bristol Bird Club second edition effort making a kind
offer to prepare a
large cake for the Tuesday night roll out of The Birds of Northeast Tennessee
-- Second Edition.
She is preparing a very specially-decorated cake. Cake decorating has long
been one of her
passions and she looks forward to making her first contribution to the Bristol
Bird Club. She attended
our July BBC Picnic at Steele Creek Park and was able to meet many of the
members. She has been
birding for some years. She developed an interest in birding while earning a
B.S. in biology at Milligan
College and birding with Dr. Gary Wallace. She took his long coast-to-coast
summer nature and
birding trips. She works as a nurse in the newborn nursery at Johnston
Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.
She also is an adjunct biology teacher at the middle school level with a
Baptist church school in Bristol.
Jennifer Kennedy
Chris has planned for weeks to do whatever he could to participate with the
Second Edition Distribution
Team for Knight's book. In addition to sending a check to help support the
cause by purchasing pledge
copies of the book, he plans to be hands on. He drove 400 miles home from
Austin Peay State University
Friday after completing his summer research work on the Wolf River and will
join Wallace Coffey and
Carolyn Coffey for lunch Monday and then will help sort boxes, count books by
boxes and load Coffey's
SUV. He will later go to the first book staging area and off load the books
and put books by cases in
Coffey's SUV to be delivered to the Steele Creek Nature Center and Park Lodge
meeting room for
Tuesday night's meeting which gets underway at 7:30 p.m. He will travel back
to Clarksville on Tuesday
morning to attend a Baptist student leadership training seminar and will miss
the Tuesday book event.
