[Bristol-Birds] Funfest Bird Walks

The second Bristol Bird Club/Ward's Funfest Bird Walk yesterday morning was great fun. We had a 17 visitors, many newcomers to bird watching, most arrived with binoculars. Most were from the Kingsport/East Hawkins county area. We divided into two groups to reduce our impact as we ventured into the wooded areas. The birds cooperated much better than on the first walk which was exasperating because very few birds were actually seen. The walks started on time at 8:30 AM and visited the areas around the Raptor Center, the pier and dam and the areas in between which were fairly quiet. We did get the opportunity to have some good looks at some good birds. Before we left the parking lot, John Hay picked up on a pair of Red-eyed Vireo in trees about 25 feet over our heads, apparently an adult and a juvenile getting a few snacks from its parent. Good looks!

We wrapped up the walks at 9:30 AM. Mary Erwin, John Hay and myself went across the dam and onto the gravel road above the ecology ponds that lie to the west. We picked a few additional species there (Eastern Wood-Peewee and a pair of Wood Ducks).

Additionally, we had an article in the Kingsport Times-News about the walk this morning, July 17th with a picture! The article had some good info about the walk and had quotes from myself, John Hay, Mary Erwin as well as Donna Monroe who was one of the new bird watchers on the walk. It also mentioned the sponsors, Ward's Feed Store and the Bristol Bird Club with our website address.

BBC members helping to lead the walks were:
Saturday (July 12): Mary Erwin, Roy Knispel, John Hay, Bill Grigsby
Wednesday (July 16): Mary Erwin, Roy Knispel, John Hay, Lois Cox, Wilma Boy, Michele Sparks

Species List for both days. Note that conspicuously absent both days as well as 2 visits prior to the birdwalks is the Eastern Towhee.
