The BIRDS of
   Northeast Tennessee

            An Annotated Checklist
                 by Richard L. Knight
                               2008
  AN IN PROGRESS Second Edition
  Update

The production team for the much-anticipated
second edition of Rick Knight's book, met four
hours Wednesday evening and enjoyed much
progress.

Mike Poe and Wallace Coffey reported additional
contacts and visits with our printer as we refined
more exact technical criteria. The book will be
printed on high quality paper and the outside
measurements will be 6 in. x 9 in.

The team hopes to have the books distributed
beginning in mid-August. That is the current target !

Michele Sparks reported the results of her investigation
and recommendation for acquiring the ISBN, copyright
registration and Library of Congress number. This
task turned out to be time consuming and complicated.
Her work has become an important contribution to this
publishing effort.

Author Rick Knight, Sparks and Coffey will meet Tuesday
to place online orders and begin the acquisition process
for each registration. Bar codes will be included and ordered.
Completion of this step will take about three weeks.

Coffey reported that the project fundraising has exceeded
goal by about $100. It was a very short and successful
campaign with many contributors. Checks for more than
half of the pledges have been received.

A record pre-publication sale of books has been received
and requests for institutions wanting books have
already been placed, including Sycamore Shoals State
Park and the Bristol Public Library. About 300 copies
have been reserved by those supporting the effort.

A discussion regarding sale, distribution and library
copies was held. Knight said some books would be
placed in reserve for future year sales. The first edition
in 1994 was out of print quickly and a significant effort
will be made to have copies available for new birders
coming into our ranks in the years ahead. Commercial
outlets, including prominent local book dealers, Amazon.com,
and Buteo Books on a national scale were discussed.

Mike Poe has been able to layout 95 pages of copy, including
season tables and index space reservation and has finalized
the template concept. The team got great looks at Rob Biller's
new region map laid out in page.

Mike used his laptop to flip screens and take us on a tour
of the template designs, some finished pages, and the
rainbow of the full color book.

Poe said more than three thousand (3,000) photo images
of historical and current photographs as well as documentary
pixs of some of the region's most important discoveries
have been contributed by area birders for birds and subjects
taken only in the five county area covered by the book.

Photos made of the many species contributed by local
photographers for consideration were a real treat to
review.

Knight said the talent of bird photography among area
birders has been a pleasant surprise.

A significant part of the work session involved reviewing
a large number of historic photos and deciding a relative
importance to regional historic bird photos based on a
one to five star system for each. This will help provide a
priority basis as the layout continues.

The group worked thru title page, copyright page and
cover elements. The cover is designed.

Michele hosted the meeting at her beautiful home and
cooked out on her deck to provide a great grill chicken
salad and finished the evening with apple pie and
ice cream. The group enjoyed dinner at her deck table
and the work session in her spacious dinning room with
much table work space.

This will be the fifth regional annotated checklist
of birds (three of Northeast TN and two of SW Virginia).

All have been published by the Bristol Bird Club
which brings an experienced group of fundraisers,
finance managers, production managers and
skilled designers to coordinate projects, not
to mention modern printing expertise.
