Area Birders,
The first BLUE-HEADED VIREO of the season for this area was found yesterday
(3/25/05) at the entrance to the Breaks Interstate Park in Dickenson County. It
was located by David Raines, a member of the Buchanan County Bird Club. The
first returning neotropical migrants for this region are found first in the
Breaks Park area each year. It isn't known whether the returning birds are
following the Russell Fork of the Big Sandy River, which cut the gorge within
the Breaks Park, or possibly following the spine of the high ridge of Pine
Mountain, which extends some 90 miles into Tennessee. The Blue-headed Vireos
are soon followed by Black-and-white Warblers, Black-throated Greens and
Yellow-throated Warblers, all appearing first at the north end of Pine Mountain
in the Breaks Park area.
David also found on Laurel Lake within the park 28 GREATER SCAUP, 7 RING-NECKED
DUCKS, 1 female HOODED MERGANSER, 10 WOOD DUCKS, 2 BUFFLEHEADS and 2
BLUE-WINGED TEAL.
Just the day before I found 17 RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS and 2 male HOODED
MERGANSERS on the lake.
Enjoy the birds,
Roger Mayhorn
