[Bristol-Birds] Extent of King College Vulture Roost

I drove thru the "King College Vulture Roost" on 8 Dec 2008 in
east Bristol Tennessee about 4:30 p.m. and many of the birds
were perched in the trees. On a rainy, overcast day this winter
we will find most of the birds still in the trees during the morning
hours. That will provide a good opportunity to actually count birds.
I could see both Black Vultures and Turkey Vultures moving about
the trees. The aerial photo below shows the main part of the
college campus. The red outline indicates the boundary within
which vultures are roosting. Birds appear to be perched in trees
over some of the areas where students walk. The wooded area
to the right in the photo below contains some "faculty-type"
housing and the vultures are apparently roosting in the yards. I
am convinced (without a count) that the roost may contain no
less than 100 birds. I suppose maybe a dozen trees over several
hundred yards are being used for roosting. Perhaps we will
be able to document this roost more carefully -- Wallace Coffey,
