[Bristol-Birds] Eurasian Collared-Dove, Barred Owl, American Redstart, Summer Tanager, Dickcissel (Greene, Hamblen, and Washington Co., TN)

June 4, 2005

Greene County (mostly Joachime Bible Refuge unit of Lick Creek Bottoms
Wildlife Management Area and vicinity);
Panther Creek State Park (shore of Cherokee Lake in Hamblen County);
southern Washington County (Limestone and South Central)

I spent about four hours birding today at scattered intervals in widely
scattered areas of Greene and two neighboring counties. In addition to
finding good numbers of regular summer residents, I also encountered a
few species that deserve special mention--

Eurasian Collared-Dove (adjacent to West Greene High School, where it
has often been seen before by numerous observers; this is the twelfth
consecutive month in which it has been recorded);

Barred Owl (2 at Panther Creek State Park; the birds were calling back
and forth on a high wooded ridge between the campground and the
overlook; Nicholson's Atlas of the Breeding Birds of Tennessee shows no
info for Hamblen County);

American Redstart (singing male in a stand of white pines at the
intersection of Charlie Carson Road and Thompson Lane in Washington
County; this low-elevation area in farm country along the Nolichuckey
River is not suitable nesting habitat, so I assume that this bird was a
late migrant);

Summer Tanager (a hard-to-find species in northeast Tennessee; I heard 3
singing males at Panther Creek State Park);

Dickcissel (2 singing males at the intersection of Old State Route 34
and Taylor Mill Road in Washington County, and another a few miles away
at the intersection of Corby Bridge Road and Ross Broyles Lane; 1
singing male at the Bible Refuge in Greene County (8th consecutive year
for Dickcissel at this site in summer)).
