Ellen Parker of Piney Flats, TN, will join the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation's Warriors' Path State Park summer interpretive staff this year. She learned of her selection from April Welch, the East Tennessee Regional Interpretive Specialist. She will be working with Marty Silver who has been the Warriors' Path State Park Naturalist for many year. The park is one of 18 in East Tennessee and one of nearly 50 statewide. For many years it has been known to local residents as Tennessee most visited state park. Warriors' Path State Park includes 950 acres on Fort Patrick Henry Reservoir and Duck Island on the South Fork Holston river at Kingsport. The land was acquired from TVA in 1952. The state originally planned to locate the park where Steele Creek Park is in Bristol Tennessee but changed plans when the lakefront property at the present site became available. Warriors' has an excellent record and reputation for a variety of outstanding events and program, including nature events. Nearly 12-miles of trails meander through park woodlands offering great views, a diversity of wildlife habitats, and a richness of typical East Tennessee forests, fields and wetlands. The paved walking path around Duck Island is fully accessible, and other fully accessible trails are in the planning stages. Several other trails are also under development and one that includes a small boardwalk through the Sinking Waters wetland area. Tennessee State Parks was established through legislation in 1937, and those laws, with modifications and additions over the years, remain the framework for park operations today. Ellen is the mother of Charlie Parker who is a naturalist at Steele Creek Park Nature Center in Bristol. She is a member of the Bristol Bird Club, an officer and member of the board of directors of the Friends of Steele Creek Nature Center and Park. She is currently serving BBC as chair of the club's nominating committee. She is married to Bob Parker and they have been frequent participants and hosts to many BBC events. Ellen is a former public school teacher. She is a graduate of Sullivan East High School and the University of Tennessee. She studied ornithology under Dr. Fred Alsop at ETSU.
