Area Birders:
The Screech-Owl reported at Musick's Campground on
South Holston Lake has evidently not been present at
the box during the winter. Almost all of our birders keep
and eye on the opening as do Mae, Carol and Virgil.
For that matter, we have not seen one at either of the
campground's two owl boxes.
When Screech-Owl and Great Horned Owls suddenly
change their roosting locations in late winter or early
spring, they move to their nesting location.
We should now expect the owl at the box beside the
campground gate to be at its breeding site. Eggs will
probably be laid by the last week of March. Young
will be hatched by the last week of April. Baby owls
will fledge by mid to late May.
We've banded adult and young owls at this location
for several years. Richard Lewis has been the bander
here and I suspect we will again capture one or more
adults to band as well as the young. In early 2001,
Rick Knight captured and banded an adult a few
hundred feet away at another box in the campground.
Also, many Great Horned Owls are nesting throughout
the region. They should have tiny young now or within
the next 10 days. Pay particular attention to crows
mobing in a big, loney pine tree standing in an otherwise
hardwood forest or at an old crow, hawk or squirrel nest.
We've seen them use cavities in dead and broken off
tree tops.
Let's look forward to these exciting events.
