October 30, 2004 Cocke County, TN: Dutch Bottoms (DB); Rankin Wildlife Management Area (RWMA) I spent about three hours this morning and early afternoon at Dutch Bottoms and Rankin Wildlife Management Area, looking mainly for late migrating summer residents and transients but hoping for winter residents as well. Birding was good, though not spectacular. Here's the scoop: Pied-billed Grebe (35 DB); Double-crested Cormorant (46 DB); Great Egret (44--42 DB, 2 RWMA); Mallard (29 DB); Northern Shoveler (4 DB); Bald Eagle (juvenile DB, perched in a low tree and viewed at point-blank range); Least Sandpiper (22 DB); Dunlin (135--132 RWMA, 3 DB); Ring-billed Gull (339 DB); Herring Gull (2 DB); Tree Swallow (4 DB); Golden-crowned Kinglet (7 DB); Ruby-crowned Kinglet (2 DB); Hermit Thrush (3 DB); American Pipit (3 DB); Northern Waterthrush (RWMA--very late date).
