[Bristol-Birds] Dr. Steve Hopp to speak at Naturalist Rally

Ornithologist Dr. Steve Hopp will be the featured
Friday night speaker at the Mount Rogers Naturalist
Rally which will be held the weekend of May 9-10 at
Konnarock, Va, northeast of Damascus.

His talk will be : "The Sights of Sounds" Computer 
Analysis and Imaging of the Songs of Birds."

Dr. Hopp received his Ph.D. in Animal Behavior 
from Indiana University. He moved to Southwest 
Virginia in 1984 and taught at Emory & Henry College
for ten years. 

From 1994 through 2004 he taught ornithology at 
the University of Arizona and served as research 
associate at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum 
where he studied bird ecology. He returned to the
Emory campus in 2004, where he now teaches 
environmental studies. 

He has been studying ecology and behavior of 
vireos for more than 20 years, with a particular interest 
in vocal communication.

He teamed with Bristol Bird Club members Alice Kirby
and Carol Boone, in 1995, to author the 
White-eyed Vireo in The Birds of North America, 
series No. 168, published by the Academy of Natural
Sciences, Philadelphia, and The American 
Ornithologists' Union.

Birder's World magazine, April 1996, published an
article about his conversion of his Meadowview 
Farm to White-eyed Vireo habitat.

Dr. Hopp, and his wife Barbara Kingsolver, live on
the farm.  She wrote the New York Times bestselling 
novels The Poisonwood Bible and Prodigal Summer.
They moved to the farm in 2004 from Tucson, Arizona.

They both are frequently seen hawk watching in the fall
at Mendota.

He has more recently become interested in sustainable
agriculture and has spearheaded a development project in 
Meadowview. He also serves on the board of 
Appalachian Sustainable Development.

                SCHEDULE OF EVENTS
                       Friday, May 9

5:00 PM: Registration begins, Konnarock Community Center. 
Fee is $5 for each person 12 or older.
 
6:00 7:00 PM: Chicken supper prepared and served by the 
Konnarock Community Club at the Konnarock Community 
Center. Prepaid reservations for supper are absolutely, 
positively necessary. The cost is $10.00 per plate. 
NOTE: This fee goes totally to the community center.

7:30 P.M.-Welcome, introductions of field trip leaders, 
last~minute announcements.

8:00-Featured speaker, Dr. Steven Hopp
                        Saturday, May 10

7:00 A.M. Continuing registration. Anyone who has not 
registered should do so. Registration is on an honor 
system, but your small fee helps insure the future of 
the rally.

8:00 A.M. Morning field trips depart Konnarock Community 
Center.

11:30 Lunch break. Hot dogs for sale.

1:00 P.M. Afternoon field trips depart Konnarock Community 
Center.
