[Bristol-Birds] Douglas Lake 8/28/08

Dutch Bottoms & Ten Islands, Cocke county, 8/28/08, 4-7:00 PM
Lake elevation: 970.6 ft.

First, we stopped at "Newport Beach", the wide area with the white fence across from Dutch Bottoms Church on Highway 25E. A few shorebirds were feeding on the mudflats, and a small flock of Caspian terns were resting on a bar farther out on the lake. We then put in our canoe at Walters Bridge and motored up the lake to Ten Islands. Heavy rains had swollen the river and flushed a mess of tree limbs, vegetation, and human litter into the area. The debris was strewn in a broad swath for a mile or more along what had been the most-favored feeding grounds for shorebirds a few days ago. Their numbers & variety were less than we expected; most peculiar, there were no killdeer to be seen - a peregrine scare? . We returned on the water to Newport Beach, where there were quite a few more peeps than earlier.
