Stoney Creek and Wilbur Lake

J.T. and I set out late this afternoon to try our luck at the McDaniel-Hay
Snowy Egret, but no luck.

On our way back up Stoney Creek we checked out the Rasar Farm and Wilbur
Lake. At the Rev. Henry E. Colvard Memorial Bridge (over Watauga River)
the Cliff Swallows were very active. This is the first time that I have
stopped here to check out the nests. I assume this is the same locale that
Rick Knight reported nest from on 26 Apr 2005 (44 nests under Hunter
Bridge?). I counted somewhere between 44 and 48 nests (some were hard to
make out). This site is pretty cool because you can drive up under the
bridge at the boat ramp.

After the Rasar Farm area we decided to check out Wilbur Lake. Wednesday,
Brookie Potter had told my mom that there were Cliff Swallows nesting under
Wilbur Lake Bridge. We arrived just before dark and were pleased to see
the swallows still out and about. We counted 13-15 nests under the bridge.
Has anyone (besides Jean and Brookie) ever had them here before? Maybe I
have been out of the loop, but this was the first I have heard about them
there. Thank you Brookie!

We also spent some time watching three beavers swimming around under the
bridge. Several people stopped to watch with us.
