Area Birders,
Horn Mountain here in Buchanan County was the birding spot today for my wife
and me. Horn Mountain is part of the Lonesome Pine section of the VA Mountain
Area Birding and Wildlife Trail. We drove the six miles of graveled road,
stopping at wide spots to get out to look and listen. There are few houses on
this road and little traffic, so there are lots of good birding areas of mostly
deciduous trees, just beginning to leaf out. OVENBIRDS were the warblers in
greatest numbers, which is the usual case in this area. We found our first of
the year AMERICAN REDSTARTS, and at one point we thought we heard a
Chestnut-sided Warbler, but since it didn't sing again we marked it a no show.
Two CERULEAN WARBLERS were in tree tops just beside the road and gave us great
looks. A couple of HOODED WARBLERS could be heard doing their thing, as well as
BLACK-AND-WHITES, BLACK-THROATED GREENS, a NORTHERN PARULA and a
YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER. At the edge of one of the few areas of open
pastureland two YELLOW WARBLERS dueled vocally within a few feet of us. One
male was especially brightly colored with deep reddish-brown stripes marking
his chest.
A BROAD-WINGED HAWK posed for us after landing on a branch just below the
roadway. With its back to us it ignored us as it scanned the ground beneath its
perching tree. The buteo shape, the crow size and the banded tail made the ID
easy. The raptor beak, visible as it turned its head, was impressive.
Woodpeckers were drumming at almost every stop and EASTERN TOWHEES everywhere
were drinking a great amount of tea. BLUE-HEADED VIREOS were out in force, and
we were a bit surprised that we didn't find a Red-eyed. It was sometimes
difficult to hear distant birds with the singing of the BLUE-HEADEDS and the
TUFTED TITMICE.
