Washington Co. Park, VA (on shore of South Holston Lake)
At about 4:40 pm today, while on the Bristol CBC, Ellen Parker & I heard a
Brown-headed Nuthatch in the pines next to the boat ramp.
According to the VSO "gold book" (Rottenborn & Brinkley 2007), the nearest
records in VA would be from Pulaski & Patrick Cos. In TN, the nearest are
in Knox Co. Quite a gap on both sides.
We were looking at 3 Eared Grebes from the top of the boat ramp when we
clearly heard the distinctive "squeaky toy" call of the Brown-headed Nuthatch.
We tried to coax it into view, but were unable to do so. Pressed for time, we
headed over to Musick's Campground (Sullivan Co., TN) where we saw
3 Sandhill Cranes at dusk.
Couple of nice finds for the CBC.
