I guess the third time's the charm. On my third trip to try to locate
Bobolinks reported on the Lee & Lois Herndon Chapter of TOS's spring
bird count on Saturday, April 29, I finally found three male Bobolinks
in a field near the Evening Breeze Arena near the one-lane iron bridge
spanning the Watauga River near Elizabethton in Carter County.
Two previous trips had been unsuccessful. This is only the second time
I have seen Bobolinks in Carter County.
These fields, by the way, are a blackbird haven. Other species present
included Red-winged Blackbird, Common Grackle, Brown-headed Cowbird and
Eastern Meadowlark. Also present were House Sparrow, Field Sparrow,
Chipping Sparrow, Song Sparrow, Northern Mockingbird, European Starling
and Barn Swallow.
