[Bristol-Birds] Black-legged Kittiwake

At apx. 5:20 PM on Saturday, 4/19/03, an adult, breeding plumaged, Black-legged
Kittiwake was found at Musick's Campground on South Holston Lake in Sullivan
County, TN. It flew back and forth, in and out of Washington County, VA several
times.

It was observed by 7 birders, all getting excellent looks through a 30 power
spotting scope. At times it flew as close as a couple hundred feet away from
us. It landed on the water a couple times.

Dexter Newman was able to take a series of digital photos of the bird, both in
flight and resting on the water. He was using high-powered quality equipment
and we were able to veiw the results on a lap top computer. Diagnostic shots
were taken.

We will attempt to get photos on the web.

Don Holt, Allan Trentley, Rack Cross, Dexter Newman, Linda Newman, Mike Poe and
I saw the bird. At apx. 6:10 PM the kittiwake, along with about 20 Ring-billed
Gulls circled high and flew down the lake southward, not to be seen again. Some
ring-bills stayed in the area.
