I spent four days in coastal South Carolina last week, birding on Fripp
Island and Hunting Island with fellow Lee & Lois Herndon Chapter TOS
members Reece Jamerson and David Thometz.
We saw a total of 95 species, including observations of 15 different
species of shorebirds as well as wading birds such as Great Egret,
White Ibis and Tri-colored Heron.
Some specialty birds we enjoyed seeing included Brown-headed Nuthatch,
Piping Plover, American Oystercatcher, Wood Stork, Anhinga and Seaside
Sparrow.
I finally saw a Tufted Titmouse on Fripp Island. Previously, I had only
seen this bird on Hunting Island.
The only ducks we found during our stay were Hooded Mergansers.
Other wildlife, such as White-tailed Deer, raccoons, American
Alligators and porpoises also offered viewing opportunities. Some
butterflies, including Monarch and Gulf Fritillary, remained abundant,
managing to find enough blooming flowers to obtain the nectar necessary
for their survival.
