[Bristol-Birds] Birding, Carter County, TN

Brian and Tinker Rivera, visiting from Reno, Nev., birded on Tuesday, April 19,
with Bryan Stevens, Gilbert Derouen and Tess Cumbie at Sycamore Shoals State
Park, Elizabethton, and Wilbur Lake, near Elizabethton, in Carter Co.

At Sycamore Shoals, the group enjoyed watching five Broad-winged Hawks as they
soared in circles overhead. It was fun to have all five hawks in the binoculars
at the same time. This was a new life bird for Brian and Tinker Rivera.

Other lifers came with the Yellow-crowned Night-Herons. We found two
Yellow-crowns in the shoals area on the Watauga River along the park's trails.

Other birds at Sycamore Shoals included Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, White-throated
Sparrows, Chipping Sparrows, a pair of Brown Thrashers.

At Rasar Farm on Lincoln Avenue in Elizabethton, the group found a Palm Warbler
in breeding plumage as well as Yellow-rumped Warblers in different stages of
winter to spring plumage. We also saw a Green Heron flying over the stream and
the pastures along Lincoln Avenue. We also had a busy Red-bellied Woodpecker at
this location.

Later, at Wilbur Lake, the group saw six Buffleheads, apparently the last of
the wintering ducks.

In addition, the group heard Black-throated Green Warblers, Yellow-throated
Warblers, Ovenbirds and Blue-headed Vireos. Also heard a couple of Pileated
Woodpeckers.
