I saw the resident Barn Owl at the Veteran's Administration (VA) last
evening (March 23). It was peering down from roost in the upper rafters of
the Theater Building at about 8:15pm. On the right side of the building
there is an opening where Barn Owls have nested for over 20 years. Dr. Fred
Alsop keeps tabs to make sure this opening is not closed or if it gets
closed has it reopened. I'm not sure if the owl I saw was an adult or a
almost ready to fledge offspring. It was just dark enough not to be able to
see the bird clear enough. But it was an adult sized Barn Owl with little
buttons for eyes and while it looked down at me its head would weave back
and forth. When I moved a little closer to the building, its interest in me
waned and it backed up out of view. The VA campus is located in Johnson
City, TN (Washington County).
