[Bristol-Birds] BIRDERS FLOCKED TO GET RICK KNIGHT'S BOOK !

BIRDERS FLOCKED TO GET RICK KNIGHT'S SECOND EDITION

Rick Knight walked into a room of 60 birders at Steele Creek Park Lodge
in Bristol tonight to a standing ovation. It was an appreciative audience
from across the region who came to see his rollout of the
Birds of Northeast Tennessee -- Second Edition.

It was obvious that everyone wanted to say "thank you" for the years of
work which will provide them years of wonderful birding.

"This is your book," Knight told them in remarks which thanked everyone
who helped make the book a reality with their birding results.

It was a festive evening that lasted well into the
night as birders stood in long lines to have Rick
sign their books. Writer's cramps grew and grew
as photographers were asked to sign books and
more books. Artist Suzanne Stryk, whose fabulous
drawings graced the inside the front and
back covers, gladly signed her work for the crowd.

It was the most autographs ever signed at a bird
club meeting in the region's history.

Birders huddle everywhere to see the promised.

The crowd bettered the previous record high for a regular monthly meeting
for any bird club in the region.

Only the great turnout to hear America's most famous birder, Kenn Kaufman,
on Oct. 9, 2000 at the Bristol Bird Club, nearly tied the record number which
came
out for Richard L. Knight on this evening.

Red, black and white
balloons swayed in a gentle
breeze along the park's
driveway as birders
arrived.

At left is a dramatic cake
baked and decorated by
BBC member Jennifer
Kennedy to celebrate the
evening and the book.

The BBC had hundreds
and hundreds of dollars
in book sales just tonight.
In addition to the cake,
birders baked items and
brought punch and nuts
and all kinds of good
thinks to eat for the
crowd.

Smiling faces left to
return long distances
home, carrying arms
full of books.

Big time great photographers
from across the region
stopped to congratulate
each other on the photos
each had published so
dramatically in the book.

It was a moment when new
faces in our birding community
surged into the history of
Mountain Empire Birding
and their many great photos
will live on in printed volumes headed to dozens of major regional libraries
and university collections. Their images will live on in the eyes of those
who read these pages in the next century. This was a defining moment
in the history of the region's birding. It was a night when the images of
so many became remembered forever in our birding communities. Those
who had beautiful photos published here suddenly became the icons of
birding photography that others will aspire to become.

It was a night when birders from communities across nearly 200 miles
came together to embrace the thousands and thousands of special records
which were published by Knight -- knowing their finds and their great moments
have now been recorded in birding history. There were many glowing faces.

Decades of field work were again recognized for so many.

New birders to the region went home with their ultimate guides to the history
of birding in this five-county area they have long wanted to hold and own.

It was a night so special for so many. Everyone loved every one moment.

It was obvious when our reserved tables at the Mad Greek Restaurant
for the pre-meeting Dutch dinner drew a capacity crowd, that this
was going to be a night of special proportions.
