Dr. Andy Jones, who grew up in Kingsport and is a member of the Bristol Bird
Club, is the new
Recording Secretary of the American Ornithologists' Union. He will serve in
the capacity
for a three-year term beginning this month. His duties will include keeping a
record of the
meetings of the AOU and of its governing
bodies and distributing minutes and
proceedings of the meetings.
The first official annual meeting he will
be responsible for is the 126th meeting
held Aug. 4-8, 2008 in Portland, Oregon.
It will be a joint meeting with the Cooper
Ornithological Society and the Society
of Canadian Ornithologists.
He has attended and presented papers
at the AOU scientific sessions in previous
years.
Founded in 1883, the American Ornithologists'
Photo by Michele Sparks Union is
the oldest and largest organization
in the New World devoted to the scientific study of birds. Although the AOU
primarily is a
professional organization, its membership of about 4,000 includes many amateurs
dedicated
to the advancement of ornithological science.
Andy is a moderator of Bristol Birds Net and the TN-Birds Net. He regularly
participates
in the four Christmas Bird Counts sponsored by the BBC. He has been on counts
with the club
for nearly 15 years.
He is a former naturalist at Steele Creek Park Nature Center in Bristol. Andy
is the William A.
and Nancy R. Klamm Endowed Chair of Ornithology and Head of Department of
Ornithology at the
Cleveland Museum of Natural History, Cleveland, OH.
