Bristol Area Birders:

A group of 35 persons turned out tonight for the annual meeting of the
Kingsport Bluebird Society at the Kingsport Civic Auditorium.

The Bristol Bird Club was invited to present a program on birding in the
area, our club and opportunities for birding. Eight members of BBC attended
to represent the club: Sybil Williams, Sammy Cross, Rack Cross, Ruth Smith,
Janice Martin, John Hay, Bill Grigsby and Wallace Coffey. Rack Cross and
Coffey made presentations to the group on behalf of our club.

Several of us met earlier for dinner at Shoney's on Ft. Henry Drive. The
BBC display was set up and attracted much interest as did copies of our four
published annotated checklist books about birds of the Virginia Cumberlands,
Shady Valley, Smyth County and Northeast Tennessee.

Coffey told the group of the history of bird study in the region and the
formation of bird clubs at Kingsport, Elizabethton, Greeneville and Bristol
from 1944 to 1950. He talked about the organization and history of the BBC
and our current meetings, field trips, counts, and social event to includ
picnics, annual meetings and Christmas parties as well as dinner at the Mad
Greek before our third Tuesday meeting each month. The group was also given
some information about the listserver Bristol Birds Net and our website.
He explained how modern-day birding has evolved from birdwatching and a
little about how birders compile life lists and make day trips as well as
some who travel widely to bird.

Cross talked about good places to go birding in the region and birding
experiences and his enjoyment of being a BBC member. He reflected on the
club's sponsorship of field trips at last year's Kingsport Fun Fest. The
group was told that we would sponsor more Fun Fest birdwalks this year.
Bill Grigsby was able to provide the group the date for the BBC-sponsored
May 15 birdwalks we will conduct jointly with the Natura Tunnel State Park
in Scott Co., VA.

Our members were introduced and most greeted the bluebird group members and
some stayed after the meeting to talk further with individuals about birding
and what BBC does.

It was a good opportunity to meet a large group of people from the Kingsport
community who have a true interest in birds and conservation. Rack Cross
thanked them on behalf of the BBC for what they do for bluebirds and
consevation and wildlife habitat preservation in the area. Larry McDaniel
was our point man with the bluebird people but was under the weather and
unable to attend. Sammy Cross made a video of the BBC presentations.

The group reported about their bluebird nesting boxes and number of fledged
birds this past year. There was enlightened discussion and questions and
answers about the species and its nesting. The Kingsport Tomorrow was
represented and announced plans for scouts to make bird boxes during April
and sell them to raise money. A number of great door prizes were given in a
drawing, including beautiful art prints of bluebirds.

Let's go birding.....
