[Bristol-Birds] BBC Iron Mountain-Hurricane Field Trip

Hi Birders:
The BBC field trip to the Iron Mountain-Hurricane Branch area within the
Mount Rogers National Recreational Area (Grayson County and Smyth County) is
set
for this Saturday, June 19, 2004. Wallace Coffey and Ron Harrington will be the
leaders.

Meeting Places and Departure Times:

ETSU Bristol Campus, Volunteer Parkway: Leave at 7:30
Chevron Station, Exit 14, I-81, Abingdon: Leave at 8:00
Mount Rogers Inn/Restaurant, Exit 35, I-81, Chilhowie: Leave at 8:30

This trip will offer a wide variety of bird habitats at elevations varying
from 2860 to 4480. From Chilhowie, we will take Route 600 to the top of Iron
Mountain. Near Skull's Gap, we will turn East along the crest of the mountains
on
U.S. Forest Service Route 84. After a stop at Cherry Camp (Elevation 4480) to
look for Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, we will travel down Hurricane Branch for
about 5.6 miles, which will include a stop at the clearing with the Red Spruce
where Wallace and I found the Golden-crowned Kinglet Nest again this year. We
stop at the Hurricane Branch Campground (2860) for a spell before taking
Comers Creek Road back up the mountain to Route 16, where we will take a right
back towards Troutdale, Va. At the Grayson County line, we will turn right on
Homestead Road along the headwaters of Comers Creek where we heard a Chickadee
singing like a Black-capped back in May. After about 3.5 miles we will
intersect with route 603 and make a stop where the Applachian Trail crosses the
road.
From there we will travel back towards Troutdale, Va, take a left on route 16
for the eight mile trip to Sugar Grove. From Sugar Grove, it is about 10 miles
to I-81(Exit 45).

Bring along some snacks, soft drinks or water, two-way radios if you have
them; and a light jacket might come in handy at the higher elevations. For
those
more interesting in eating, we plan to make a stop at the famous Sugar Grove
Diner after a fullfilling and exciting morning of birding. Hope to see you
there!!!!
