Dave and Diana Worley traveled nearly three and one-half hours
in snow and icy roads to attend the Bristol Bird Club's Saturday
night Annual Regional Christmas Party held at the home of Michele
Sparks. The were stalled for more than an hour above
Douglas Wayside along US 19 in a traffic delay and salt truck
operations. They stayed the night in Bristol.
Snow was falling heavy in
Southwest Virginia and about
an inch accumulated at Bristol
with little to no snow in Kingsport
and Johnson City. The snow
stopped and roads were in great
shape by the time most birders
were heading home around 11 p.m.
Except the brief search for
Fred Martin's lost car keys,
everyone traveled home
with ease and with out delay.
A really nice turnout braved a winter storm watch and
sometimes slippery roads to spread cheer, Christmas joy and
fellowship with birding friends. It was the BBC's fourteenth
annual holiday party.
While birder turnout was about half
the crowd present for the 2004
party at Bob, Ellen and Charlie
Parker's home when birders came
from as far away as Knoxville and
Chattanooga to attend the event,
there was no lack of enthusiasm.
Michele's home was absolutely beautiful. We arrived in
a light snowfall for some and the many Christmas lights outside
her hose and salt on the sidewalk cleared the way for a fabulous
evening.
The food was all anyone could imagine
from bayou low-country specials including a big pot of gumbo to
an amazing spread of special dishes and wow-type desserts.
Larry McDaniel, Charlie Parker and Ricky entertained everyone by
singing and jamming on guitars. The gift swap was rowdy with much
laughter.
Three awards, BBC 2008
Birder of the Year, the
James & Mae Musick Award
and the BBC 2008 Best New
Birder drew much appreciation
and applause. The sincere
speeches of gratitude and
acceptance from the recipients
were special.
Among the fun-time birders who
came and stayed to watch
Mad Dog McDaniel crawl to his car were:
Lisa Tyler, Lois Cox, Janice Martin, Fred Martin , Wilma Boy,
Mary Erwin, Judy Roach, Dave Worley, Rob Biller, Carolyn Coffey,
Diana Worley, John Hay, Rack Cross, Mike Poe, Wallace Coffey,
Roy Knispel, Larry McDaniel, Charlie Parker, Ellen Parker,
Rick Knight, Michele Sparks, Janet Brown and Ricky Martin.
Merry Christmas birders
and remember the club
meets Tuesday, Dec. 16,
at Steele Creek Park
Lodge to plan our four
annual Christmas Bird
Counts. Many birders
will gather at the Mad Greek
Restaurant for dinner at 6 p.m.
before the meeting
at 7:30 p.m.
Let's go birding . . .
