Actually here is how the process works and where the "bogging" down happens. Which believe me your books are going to be approved. 1. Book is submitted. 2. Volunteer takes book and validates it, could be five minutes, could be three months, depends on the book the quality length, complexity and of course if it is advertised so we know that it is actually on the list to be downloaded. 3. Validated book is uploaded, and sent on for Administration approval. There is only a few people doing this step, so this is where the second bottle neck is. Your final two steps (creating the daisy and .brf files, and logging in the database) are actually done by automated tools, and shouldn't take too much time. But Steps two and three are what takes books so long. I have had books appear on the New books page the next day and I have books in the same line that yours are that that were submitted in October. It is a volunteer system, so it does take time. How to speed up the process. here are a few things that can help speed up the process. 1. Prevalidate your scanned book. Give it a spell check, make sure all the pages are there, and if you are ambitious remove the junk characters that appear in every scan. 2. Announce on this or the volunteer list that you have submitted such and such. if it peaks someone's interest it will be downloaded and validated quicker, at least that is my experience. it is not required but does seem to make the process speed up. Lower quality rated books those that are "fair" or good take longer to validate and will probably stay longer on the list of books to be "validated. And finally. We have a back log of books, as the Christmas holidays the staff was out of the office, but the volunteers were still busy. I suspect things will straighten themselves out over the next few months or so. So don't loose heart, keep validating and submitting and the credits will catch up to you. Shelley L. It is not enough to stare up the steps - we must step up the stairs. -- Vance Havner ----- Original Message ----- From: "Captain357" <Captain357@xxxxxxxxxxx> To: "Bookshare-Discuss" <bookshare-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Saturday, January 22, 2005 2:26 PM Subject: [bookshare-discuss] time duration for phases of processing & publication Hi all, As a new volunteer and still in processing, member, I have much to learn and many questions. I was told this is the place to get allot of great information, so hello to everybody and here goes with the first question. Can someone outline the average time it takes for each phase in the publication process to complete after a book is approved and uploaded in validation? I have validated books of my own and others awaiting editing/validation through the past few weeks. Not a one of these books are yet available, don't reflect in my account status, and I have received no acknowledgements on scanned books I've submitted, stating their publication. Are they just bogged down in a massive workload facing Bookshare? From what I've been able to find out, these are some of the phases following validation: * administrator approval of validated book * conversion to daisy format * documenting and getting into Bookshare library for member access I think Bookshare is a great, long overdue option for BLV people and I'm trying to get a good understanding of what's involved so I can be as efficient as possible in getting books to the finish line (available to members). Your input on this is much appreciated! Thanks, David -- No virus found in this incoming message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus.
