[bookshare-discuss] Re: Simon & Shuster Signs Agreement with Bookshare

Let me follow up on my comments on wanting Pathfinder press to provide digital books to Bookshare. I have, myself, scanned and submitted several Pathfinder titles, but even though I put quite a bit of work into that, I would not mind my submissions being wiped out by being replaced by Pathfinder's own submissions. Pathfinder Press is a leading publisher of revolutionary and communist literature in the United States and could be said to be the publishing wing of the Socialist Workers Party. That is the organization that I used to work with politically. There is another publisher named International Publishers. It has the same relationship with the Communist Party, USA as Pathfinder has with the SWP. I do not politically favor the CPUSA, but International Publishers does hold proprietary rights over some very important versions of some Marxist classics and some very important books of a historical nature. That mmeans that I would like to see International Publishers provide books to Bookshare too. I scanned one of their titles, State and Revolution by V. I. Lenin, and it was very difficult to scan. The margins were so close to the spine that every page was a major operation to get right. It is in the collection now, but I still think that it is probably less than perfect and if International Publishers made their own submission to replace it I would not spend a lot of time bemoaning all the work I put into it.

For what it's worth, I would like to see Pathfinder Press join up. Some years back I and a couple of other people got quite a lot of Pathfinder titles recorded by RFB&D. Pathfinder even started publishing a note in the front of their catalog that many of their titles were available from RFB&D with some information about how to sign up for RFB&D. When RFB&D made its digital conversion, though, most of those Pathfinder books did not make it through the conversion. I did suggest to Bookshare that they be contacted and I was told that my suggestion would be forwarded to the publisher liaison, but I heard nothing else and I have been out of contact with Pathfinder Press for quite some time. In the 1990s Pathfinder Press went through a digital conversion of their own to get all their holdings into a digital format for their own purposes and to be compatibole with the new printing press they bought and I was in regular contact with one of the chief volunteers involved with that conversion, but I have fallen out of contact with him too, so I really don't know what is going on with Pathfinder lately.

I, for one, would love to see a smaller publishing house sign. It's Tripple Crown Publications. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kim Friedman" <kimfri11@xxxxxxxxxxx>

Hmm! Now wouldn't it be grand if Alfred A. Knopf would sign up with
Bookshare? What other publishers do you all wish to see in the Bookshare
fold? Regards, Kim Friedman.

This is a wonderful development. Bookshare members, and Simon and Schuster as well, should be very pleased and proud at the vast numbers of books this
will undoubtedly provide to many of us blind folk.

Where can we get a list of Simon and Schuster imprints so that we
can avoid
submitting them?
