Ellis Peters' books are set in 12th century England during the reign of
Stephen, before Henry II, father of Richard the Lion Heart, of Lion in
Winter fame.

P.D. James is good and some of her books are on bookshare. There's also
Sarah Peretsky, don't take the spelling to heart. A short story collection
is on the new books list.
