Sarah:

I know what is causing your problem, and I know how to fix it. Look in the =
BP manual under "How Do you Reassign Drive Letters Under XP?" section. You =
have a basic drive letter conflict, which is very common with a network. =
Interestingly enough, this is the fault of Windows more than anything =
else; it can happen with any USB mass storage device and a network.

As for BPL, I'm not sure why disabling it helped, since it doesn't do =
anything when you have a drive letter conflict. In either case, no harm =
done! Advanced users like yourself who are willing to try anything and =
share your results with others keep products growing! Restarting the PC =
with the BP connected is an interesting twist we hadn't considered, and it =
turned out to be effective troubleshooting in your case.

Hi Rob,

I think I mentioned this in two earlier messages, but the reason I had =3D
to disable the BPL on my work computer is because we have a very secure =
=3D
network. Removing the SD TTSMP3 driver didn't solve this problem. The =
=3D
only other work-around I found was to take my computer off the network =3D
by unplugging the network cable and then reboot. After that, the =3D
BookPort Launcher works beautifully, as long as the network is not =3D
involved. Unfortunately, taking my computer off the network has been =3D
deemed an unacceptable solution by my employer.

I have absolutely no interest in defeating or disabling features, but =3D
since I have been charged with getting this project off the ground as =3D
quickly as possible, I had to find a very quick and very dirty solution. =
=3D
If a way is found to make my job's network security more forgiving, or =
=3D
the BP software less picky, I would definitely love to hear about it.
Finally, I apologize for publicly posting this work-around. I had no =3D
intention of causing any problems for APH. However, the tone of your =3D
message leads me to believe that you wish this end-user had said nothing =
=3D
about clugy work-arounds that could cause other users problems. I may =3D
be taking this to heart more than I should, and if so, I apologize =3D
again.
Under normal circumstances I would never suggest that a person disable =3D
the BPL, but after trying everything else, it has proved to be the most =
=3D
efficient way to get things done at my particular job. There was =3D
another user whose computer isn't seeing her BP, and I suggested this =3D
work-around, but I take it back, don't do it! It might not help, and it =
=3D
very well may cause headaches you don't need.

Sarah

Sarah:

Disabling the Book Port Launcher is not a good idea. Of course, you can =
=3D
do =3D3D
whatever you want, but BPL actually does a little more than detect =3D3D
connection and disconnection of the Book Port. It also manages CD =3D3D
insertion and removal for Book Port Transfer, so without it, you can't, =
=3D
=3D3D
for example, insert a digital talking book and expect the send process =3D
to =3D3D
be initiated.

If you can't connect the Book Port after booting, it sounds like we =3D
should =3D3D
work on fixing that problem instead of defeating features. You might =3D
want =3D3D
to try removing the SD TTSMP3 driver from Device Manager as suggested in =
=3D
=3D3D
an earlier message. After it reinstalls, things may work better.

Hi Tiffany,

One thing you can try is to connect your BookPort to your desktop =3D3D3D
computer, then boot up or restart the computer. When I connect my =3D3D3D
BookPort to my computer at work, it doesn't work unless I have the unit =
=3D
=3D3D
=3D3D3D
connected before the computer boots up. Additionally, I modified my =3D
=3D3D3D
BookPort Transfer Tool so the software wouldn't run automatically when I =
=3D
=3D3D
=3D3D3D
plugged in the BP.

Hi tiffany,

Sorry about the frustrations. It does take a while to get past the =3D
=3D3D3D
learning
curve. The BP is so powerful and has so many features that that factor
escalates the chances of having problems. You'll get past it though. It
won't be long before you'll feel like it is well worth the money. I've =
=3D
=3D3D
=3D3D3D
been
at it since January and I can't imagine doing without it now.

someone who has had experience with the BP not being recognized by the
desktop machine will chime in here and get you straightened out. You'll =
=3D
=3D3D
=3D3D3D
get
it.

It's necessary to transfer all files to the BP through the transfer =3D
=3D3D3D
tool.
It transforms the files, adds related support files and renames the
extensions before it copies them to the BP. That's what the doesn't =3D
=3D3D3D
support
non-filtered files error is telling you.

Are you using rechargeable batteries? They recommend against that which =
=3D
=3D3D
=3D3D3D
you
probably already know. I get much more than what you've described using
standard alkalines and I listen to lots of mp3 files.

You don't need to unplug your ear phones, It shuts itself down once you =
=3D
=3D3D
=3D3D3D
hear
those 2 little beeps whether you've got earphones attached or not.

Good luck with everything. It'll get better. Hang tough.

> Hello everyone,
> I can't remember exactly when I received my Book Port, but I know I
ordered it on the fourth of August, so have roughly only had it a month.
However, my problems with the machine have been ever since day one.
> I guess I should say that both my computers run the same operating =3D
=3D3D3D
system,
(Windows XP Home). The transfer software was installed on both machines =
=3D
=3D3D
=3D3D3D
from
the same CD, and upon opening the transfer program, both computers =3D3D3D
prompted
me to update the software to version 1.5.1.0. Additionally via the =3D3D3D
laptop
the firmware was updated to version 01.0101.
> Now, besides both computers having a similar set-up, my Book Port has
never once been able to communicate with my desktop, but it's not
necessarily a Book Port problem, because it works perfectly with my =3D
=3D3D3D
laptop.
> It was suggested that I change the drive letter assigned to the Book =3D
=3D3D3D
Port
on my desktop, but when I go into administrative tools to do it, the =3D
=3D3D3D
book
Port is not even listed, thus, I can not reassign the drive letter.
> When I plug in the USB cable, the little wave file is played, =3D3D3D
symbolizing
the plugging in of a USB device, but then a little message pops up =3D3D3D
saying
something like one or more USB devices hooked up is not recognized. For
help, click this message. That is not the exact wording, but since the
stupid thing disappears right away, I can not have it replayed. I once =3D
=3D3D3D
was
fast enough to click it with the mouse as soon as I saw it, and it only
brings up the help and support dialog box which you can otherwise get to =
=3D
=3D3D
=3D3D3D
via
the start menu. It prompts you to type in different search terms, but =3D
=3D3D3D
over
all it just brings me around in circles, and actually finding no help.
> Yesterday I did call APH tech support, but they only said to change =3D
=3D3D3D
the
drive letter, and I've already explained my problem with that above.
> I have also tried to reinstall the software from the CD, but that too
doesn't make a difference. It appears to be working correctly, as that I =
=3D
=3D3D
=3D3D3D
can
cue books up to be sent, but no matter what I do it says the Book Port =3D
=3D3D3D
is
not connected.
> Please, if anyone has ideas of how to fix this, it would be greatly
appreciated.
> Now to my other questions.
> First, I happen to have a flash drive on my desktop, and since the
computer isn't recognizing the Book Port via the cable, I thought it'd =3D
=3D3D3D
be
just as easy to save the books directly to the card.
> The books did in fact save to the card, and the Book Port sees the =3D
=3D3D3D
files,
but they will not play. I don't recall the exact message spoken, but it =
=3D
=3D3D
=3D3D3D
said
something along the lines of not being able to play unfiltered materials =
=3D
=3D3D
=3D3D3D
or
something less wordy. I looked in the manual for the word "filter", and
though it was found, it did not say anything that was worth wile to me. =
=3D
=3D3D
=3D3D3D
I'm
assuming all Book Ports would give the same message, but I was A, =3D3D3D
wondering
what filter even means in this case, and B, curious if there was maybe a
manual way of telling it to filter on the machine, so I could read files =
=3D
=3D3D
=3D3D3D
on
it without needing to go through the cable, which of course, is not
currently working.
> The third thing on my list is about batteries. The manual said =3D3D3D
batteries
should work in the 60 hour range, but my Book Port seems to go through =3D
=3D3D3D
them
ridiculously less than that. The manual says if you leave the machine
connected to the computer it will run the batteries, but makes no =3D3D3D
reference
to the headphones. I remember one of my cheep old radios was like that. =
=3D
=3D3D
=3D3D3D
No
on off button, but instead the plugging of the headphones turned it on. =
=3D
=3D3D
=3D3D3D
I do
not leave the headphones plugged in, so this is not my problem, but I =3D
=3D3D3D
was
curious since it makes no reference. I have only played txt, brf, rtf, =3D
=3D3D3D
and
other print formats so far, and not any MP3, wav, or any other audio =3D
=3D3D3D
formats
which are said to take up more power. Additionally I don't have it very
loud. My first set of batteries lasted less than 20 hours, and my second =
=3D
=3D3D
=3D3D3D
set
was less than 5. Besides leaving the batteries out entirely, I don't =3D
=3D3D3D
know
what else to do.
> My next concern is about it locking up. There are no problems with it
locking up after it's been waken up and in use, , but, it's a real =3D3D3D
problem
when trying to wake it up from sleep/off mode. I wouldn't say it happens
every time, but it is a large majority of the time. pushing the reset
command does not work, and I'm left to pulling out the batteries.
> I guess This message is long and overwhelming enough, so I'll let the
other questions/problems go for now.
> Overall I really do like the Book Port, but considering the price tag, =
=3D
=3D3D
=3D3D3D
I'm
a bit disappointed with all the problems I've been having with it. If it
weren't so many, I truly wouldn't mind shelling out such a price.
