Hi Don and list:

APH has consistently said that bookport would support NLS books. They've never said it wouldn't. Why question it?

Cheers,
Dave

Not true; I am in the beta program, and I know that NLS has encouraged all
of us to work with and contact vendors to ensure that when their download
site becomes available, players containing the DRM scheme will be available
at the same time.

NLS wants vendors to seek this necessary information from NLS, and they are
very above-board and non-secretive about it, unlike APH. Your angry
repressive attitude surprises me, because I am not asking for trade secrets. I am simply requesting, with NLS permission and approval to do so, that APH
support the inclusion of this medium in the Bookport in a timely fashion.

You make it sound as if I am breaking some sacred tradition.

"It can, of course, play _today's_ DAISY/NLS books (well, NLS
"braille books, anyhow), but of course they're not yet talking
"about something (digital
"format) that's not even generally available. I'd still agree,
"though--the BP would make a nifty Christmas gift for anyone
"who likes to read.
"
"And if/when it's possible to upgrade today's BP to play the
"NLS digital format, I wouldn't expect to see an announcement
"of that fact until the new format is generally released. APH
"has been a very close partner with NLS for many, many years
"and if it's technically possible to release new firmware and
"software that will allow support of these books, I'd have a
"strong suspicion that it's already being worked on, even
"though for their own reasons, NLS doesn't want or allow APH to
"announce the fact. There are completely valid reasons that
"software providers, accessibility or general purpose, don't
"like to pre-announce new features until the release containing
"them is actually available, so not pre-announcing such a new
"BP feature doesn't bother me one bit--if it's coming, it'll
"come when it comes and until then, why worry about it? I just
"fail completely to understand anyone's concern about it now.

"Greetings Walt and List Members,
"
"I just read the November 2006 APH Newsletter and it suggests
"the BP as a
"Christmas gift. The description states that it can play
"DAISY/NLS books. I
"pass this on in the hope that this clarifies the situation but it would
"still be comforting to get something official that puts our
"unease to rest
"and answers our questions such as "Will we have to purchase
"something so
"that the BP works with these books and, if so, how much will
"it cost?", etc.
