Hi Sandy,

Thank you for being understanding.

B T W, in regards to your previous question concerning bitrate, it is possible for a sighted person to access a "settings" menu item where one can set several variables, including bitrate. However, unlike most Windows programs, it doesn't appear to have keyboard access to open the menu, although once the dialog is opened all variables are accessible.

I just sent an EMail to Sound Taxi Support addressing the problem and asking for advise or resolution. I will post their reply.

In the meanwhile, it seems that most settings are kept from session to session, but I could find no configuration file to manually edit. The only answer I see for now to get sighted assistance (please don't flame me everybody) and it should stick until it's changed.

Other things that are available in settings are:
1. Output Sub-Folder, (Alt+O)
2. Output Path for Files from Read-Only Sources,(Alt+P)
3. Automatically convert files from Folder,(Check Box and Field for Folder path, apparently not accessible, even with Tab)
4. Audio encoder, Gives choice of WAV, MP3 or MP4 AAC Output, (Alt+E)
5. Compression Quality, 8 choices, For MP3 you get 32, 64, 96, 128, 170, 190, 220 and 320 k b p s in a drop-down combo box accessible with Alt+Down Arrow once you're on the field. 6. When Output file exists, has a drop-down combo box with a. Don't Convert, b. Generate Unique Filename and c. Overwrite Existing File 7. Check boxes for a. Show Select Files dialog on start (Alt+S) b. Automatically Start Conversion (Alt+A is marked but doesn't work) c. Advanced Mode (Alt+A is also marked but doesn't work) I have no idea what advanced mode does but I leave it checked.
8. OK (Accessed with Tab)
9. Close (Accessed with Tab)

No apology necessary. Sound Taxi is a great piece of software. Thanks for introducing it to us about a year ago.

Hi Sandy,

Sorry that I sounded snippety. I zeroed in on the last part of the paragraph and I overreacted to your answer. I saw "so, how do I convert to MP3? Or isn't it possible after all." Your answer, "It isn't possible." waved a red flag in my face, and being the rabid bull that I sometimes am...

Anyway, my apologies,

Regards,

Don...

Don, we were saying that you couldn't convert the files directly with Windows Media Player. Even as I type, I am converting said files with Sound Taxi. If anyone knows how to set the bit rate and such things, please write me off list and tell me. Now I wonder... Will it convert Real Player music? ...But that is for another list...

Lana,

Clear and honest, perhaps, but totally incorrect!

Sound Taxi, from www.soundtaxi.info, WILL convert Overdrive books to MP3 at much faster than "real-time" speed, period!!!

I quote, in part, from the Sound Taxi site:
Q: "Can I convert DRM protected WMA, M4P or iTunes files?"
A: "Yes, you can convert WMA, AAC, M4P files that are protected with Digital Rights Management (DRM)."
Q: "Is it illegal to convert DRM protected files with SoundTaxi?"
A: "No, technically SoundTaxi does not circumvent Microsoft's or Apple's iTunes DRM protection. Microsoft's DRM protection system is unprotecting the protected DRM audio files."

You may download a full-featured demo version at the above link before you buy the whole thing for $15. I've used Sound Taxi over a year to convert files for my wife with NO, that's N O, problem!

I have no fiscal or personal interest with the makers or retailers of Sound Taxi software. Just passing on the "rest of the story" to all bookport users.

Warm regards,

Don Bomer...

Now that's clear and honest. Thanks.
