Well, at the very least, it can't hurt to take five seconds at the
beginning to format your CF card, I should think.

When we bought our digital camera, the manual suggested we format the memory before taking pictures.

Offhand, I'm guessing that it's like the situation used to be, back in the dark ages, with floppies: some wil come preformatted, others will not, but in all cases you're just beter off doing it yourself anyway. That's my guess.
