This is our last chance to urge President Obama to stop Arch Coal from
destroying our roadless forests.

A loophole in the Colorado Roadless Rule could open up coal mining in this
pristine National Forest.

Urge Obama to protect our treasured public resources!

Dear Linda,

*This is our last chance to urge President Obama to stop Arch Coal from
destroying our roadless forests.*
<http://action.earthjustice.org/site/R?i=1FrrnFuGSSRWGqJbCc7KbA>

In Colorado, President Obama has two choices: Defend public lands from
devastating coal mines, or unravel his climate legacy by allowing Arch Coal
to mine up to 170 million tons of coal and choke our climate with tens of
millions of tons of carbon pollution.

*Tell President Obama to make the right choice today and stop fragile
wildlands from being mined.

In the last two years, President Obama has taken bold steps to protect our
health, economy, wildlife and forests from the ongoing and devastating
impacts of climate change.

But he may soon take a giant step backwards.

*As he walks out the door, President Obama is poised to adopt a new rule
that would open up 20,000 acres of roadless Colorado forest to
road-building, paving the way for mining 170 million tons of coal.* That
decision will undercut his climate legacy, cost the global environment and
economy up to $3.4 billion, and jump-start the acceleration of greenhouse
gas pollution under the pro-fossil fuel Trump administration.

*Tell President Obama: Protect your climate legacy by keeping Colorado
roadless forests closed to coal mining now!

This isn’t the first time we’ve fought this dangerous proposal. In 2014,
Earthjustice won a court decision that threw out the coal mine loophole in
the law meant to protect Colorado’s roadless forest. But that court
decision left the door open for the Forest Service to revive the loophole
down the road.

*President Obama may reimpose the loophole as soon as December 19, and we
need your help to stop it!

Help stop the bulldozing of up to 65 miles of road across 19,000 acres of
roadless forest, destroying habitat for black bear and elk, goshawk and
lynx…actions that benefit one coal company. And help us keep 170 million
tons of coal—and tens of millions of tons of carbon pollution—in the ground.

President-elect Trump has already attacked our environment, our climate and
our progress through his words and appointments. His cronies in Washington
are old-boy executives and lobbyists for the fossil fuel industry’s biggest
polluters—and biggest profiteers. * Mr. Trump has proposed pulling the
United States out of the Paris climate agreement, ending a moratorium on
federal coal leasing, and rolling back rules that protect public health,
like those limiting the amount of toxic mercury and arsenic spewed from
coal-fired power plants.*

President Obama shouldn’t make it easier for Trump to attack our shared
climate by adopting this loophole.

*Tell President Obama: Protect our climate and our forests. Reject the coal
mine loophole!
